May be it is the timing because of which you are not receiving replies. By June end, most of the firms have completed their recruitment drives. So best time to apply to law firms is around December and April.

There is no fixed format for resume. Remember to include all your skills which will be useful to the law firm you are applying for.

If you are planing to go for judiciary exams, join a law firm specializing in litigation else join a counsel / lawyer.

In case you want to do something in journalism, try interning with editorial board of a renowned newspaper.

Firms normally dont reply to your CV immediately unless they are in urgent need but that does not mean they have not considered your CV. They will revert as and when need arises for them.

Normally a firm would prefer a person who has interned with them. If you are happy with the work of the firm you interned with, join the same firm.
Before applying elsewhere, you can talk to the partner of the firm you interned with. If they dont have vacancy, try else where.

You should forward your resume to the law firms in which you are interested. Even though the market situation is bad, work is still flowing in. So relax and start applying. Lots of firms are these days taking interns these days.

If the slots are over, you can hardly do anything about it. Its better you go on merit in a smaller firm then on a jack in a larger firm. Keep applying and you will receive a call some day. Try sending a hard copy of your resume to the firms you wish to intern with.

Though knowing someone in the firm where you want to intern may help you, you do not necessarily require sources and contacts to get into a firm for internship. The firms may select you on the basis of your strengths.

Hi Nandita! thr r numbr of law firms in delhi. At frst u decide ur area of interest n thn go for law firms. for example AZB n AMARCGAND r considrd bst for corporate law. ANAND & ANAND z gud for IPR wrk. once u decide the law firm.. thn u ll have to maiil ur CV to respective firms whr u ll hv to specifically mention the duration of intrnship. since u r frm delhi itself .. so btr u personally visit these firms n get ur intrnship confrmd.

Civil, SEBI and corporate are three different fields and not all firms would allow a fresher to work in all these three fields at one time.
It will be better if you prioritize what you are interested in and then you can start applying to law firms which work in the field of your interest.

Interning with a good firm is always helpful and adds to your CV. Dont worry about the intern culture. You should go ahead with your internship with Kochhar. One month is not a long time and it will be beneficial for you.

Both OP Khaitan and Fox Mandal are good law firms. Firms change their policy relating to stipends for interns from time to time. So regarding stipend, you will find out on joining the firm though at this stage I would suggest that you dont worry about the stipend unless absolutely necessary.

For internships, applications can be made to the desired law firm by an email and then you can follow it up with a phone call.
If possible, you can handover your resume at the office of the law firm.
There are no hard and fast rules regarding selection of a candidate. Criteria vary from firm to firm. Draft your CV to reflect your strengths.

Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore are the top cities for legal work and I would recommend one of these 3 cities.

I would like to know that how long should one apply for an internship position since I know some folks who apply a year before..and one thing more..do law firms actually accept people on merit through CV coz all my friends make to firms through phone calls (no exception here) and I don’t have one..I mean that some firms said No to me for the slot they accepted my friend later coz he knew the”Right Way”..Now thats Bad..Btw any one know of firms that actually do take students on the basis of ur Cv..!!Thnx

Most of the big law firms take you on the basis of your CV. Law firms have a name to keep and complicated matters to be dealt with. Though what you are saying may be true to some extent, still that is not the case with all the law firms. You should start applying well in advance and then follow up with a phone call. Just mailing your CV is not enough.

In Bangalore, almost all gud law firms have an office. You can try Amarchand, AZB, Wadia Ghandy, Kocchar in Bangalore for company law. Its advisable not to join a patent specialization firm since you will restrict yourself to patents only.

Both Wadia Ghandy and Trilegal are good firms. The work culture is excellent in Wadia Ghandy and Wadia Ghandy also does a wide range of corporate matters. I am not aware about the work culture in Trilegal. For placements, it depends on the market condition and no firm can guarantee the same.

Firms dont teach/train you but you will have to learn from the work they give you. Depending on the firm, generally interns get more of research work which is very important in the legal field.
Mumbai is the best place to work though for litigation, Delhi can also be considered. All the big law firms have an office in Mumbai and most of the work especially corporate is done in Mumbai. Regarding quality, it is subject to the partner you work with.

You can obtain the details of the companies from their website. Also some companies hire through agents only. So upload y0ur resume on naukri, monster and other gud job sites.
In Pune, you will find major companies (esp. software companies) having their offices. Also the real estate sector is booming in Pune. So shortlist the companies you want to work for and then apply through their website or send in a hard copy of your resume to the company.

Which city and what kind of work are you looking for? Re. questionnaire, you will need to check with someone who may have interned / are interning with AMSS since the policy of AMSS may have changed.

Its not that without contacts you cant get internship. It depends on your college, resume and vacancy with law firms. Generally law firms have their list of interns ready for next 6 months.

Most of the ids are still working. Working with top law firms will add to your resume and will give you a very good learning opportunity and experience. If it is not possible to intern with a law firm, you can work with renowned counsels as well which will also add good value to your resume.

For counsels, it is difficult to get their ids. Even if you get their ids, they may not even look at your resume. Instead a hard copy should be forwarded to the counsels.

Follow up the status of your resume with a call to the concerned person / partner to whom you mailed your resume. You may also send hard copy of your resume to the law firms. Toppers do have an advantage while selection.
nah i dnt hav any advantages of that sort. i dnt have a legal background or some jack 2 follow up. many of my classmates who are very poor when it comes to knowledge of law have interned with firms like dua nad bhasin merely because of some jack 2 their rescue. m really clueless wot 2 do.

It may work to your disadvantage if you tell the firm that you had received offers but did not take up for some reason (unless the firm feels you had a genuine problem). You can orally communicate the fact during your interview if you have a strong reason for not taking up internship.

Is it worth doing an internship now in 1st yr; which is the ideal time/year in the entire academic span of 5-yr to go in for an internship?
– Is an internship like a regular 9-2-6 employment with hardly any flexibilities; what if the studies are affected/get damaged ‘coz of internship – how does one handle that?

Hi. Though i’m just doing my 1st yr and am looking for an internship in corporate/banking/LPO, what i know is that the SEBI is a Board (Govt. of India), which protects the interests of investors in securities, promotes the development of & regulates the securities market.
Legal/statutory compliances, services of that of a law professional/ intern could encompass the following functions undertaken by SEBI (and many other, besides the following functions) –
(a) regulating the business in stock exchanges and any other securities markets;
(b) registering and regulating the working of stock brokers, sub-brokers, share transfer agents, bankers to an issue, trustees of trust deeds, registrars to an issue, merchant bankers, underwriters, portfolio managers, investment advisers and such other intermediaries who may be associated with securities markets in any manner;
(c) registering and regulating the working of the depositories,
(d) registering and regulating the working of venture capital funds and collective investment schemes,including mutual funds;
(e) promoting and regulating self-regulatory organisations;
(f) prohibiting fraudulent and unfair trade practices relating to securities markets;
(g) prohibiting insider trading in securities

I cannot comment on which one is better. Some of the firms do pay stipend but not all. That should not be a concern at this stage.

THIS IS SO NOT DONE!!! what abt the poor law students who doesnt have anybody in the field? how are we suppose to prove that we are much much better then these referred dumb students??? HOW????
Though contacts help initially, in long run they don’t help. I know several who share the same view as yours but after trying for long time, they are in good firms today. So keep applying and try and call after a week if you don’t hear.

Sagar etc. in Delhi a day back but i have heard that one can get into these firms only if they have contacts there. Also that these firms take you only if you are atleast in your 4th year or so….Is it really the case?

Contacts don’t always help. Keep applying and following up. Firms tend to prefer 4th year students
hey Akshay a really nice blog and very helpful for law students who do not have their ‘sources’ in law firms….i needed your help regarding something. presently i`m a 4th semester student in NLU Jodhpur and looking for a law firm to intern with during may or june (2011) ..the problem is i`ve heard many ppl say that many law firms do not accept interns from the second year. secondly my CV isnt that strong except to show a ‘good’ cgpa ….so could u plz suggest some law firms accordingly where i can intern during the break between my 4th and 5th semester (may and june 2011). my first choice would be working in delhi but i`m fine with working in mumbai too.waiting for ur reply, thank you 🙂

Criteria for every law firm is different. Some of them do take 4th semester students. You need to do some research, talk to friends / people who work in the firm you are keen to join. Look for what the firm specializes in and apply accordingly.
and yeah Akshay to add on to the previous post i have 3 previous internships one in a NGO, one at UP state law commission and one at a small law firm in delhi.

Your interview and qualifications may be given more weightage. Expect anything from law related to aptitude tests. You will work as an intern or an article. Payment varies from firm to firm. Don’t expect high pay package.

Thank you for the encouraging words. Your present employer can give a reference. Not all firms require reference. Apply to firms specializing in corporate field. Amarchand Mangaldas, AZB Partners, J Sagar, Khaitan, Wadia Ghandy are some of the recommended firms for corporate work. do call the firms once you forward your resume.
