May be it is the timing because of which you are not receiving replies. By June end, most of the firms have completed their recruitment drives. So best time to apply to law firms is around December and April.

If you are planing to go for judiciary exams, join a law firm specializing in litigation else join a counsel / lawyer.

Firms normally dont reply to your CV immediately unless they are in urgent need but that does not mean they have not considered your CV. They will revert as and when need arises for them.

Normally a firm would prefer a person who has interned with them. If you are happy with the work of the firm you interned with, join the same firm.
Before applying elsewhere, you can talk to the partner of the firm you interned with. If they dont have vacancy, try else where.

You should forward your resume to the law firms in which you are interested. Even though the market situation is bad, work is still flowing in. So relax and start applying. Lots of firms are these days taking interns these days.

If the slots are over, you can hardly do anything about it. Its better you go on merit in a smaller firm then on a jack in a larger firm. Keep applying and you will receive a call some day. Try sending a hard copy of your resume to the firms you wish to intern with.

Though knowing someone in the firm where you want to intern may help you, you do not necessarily require sources and contacts to get into a firm for internship. The firms may select you on the basis of your strengths.

Hi Nandita! thr r numbr of law firms in delhi. At frst u decide ur area of interest n thn go for law firms. for example AZB n AMARCGAND r considrd bst for corporate law. ANAND & ANAND z gud for IPR wrk. once u decide the law firm.. thn u ll have to maiil ur CV to respective firms whr u ll hv to specifically mention the duration of intrnship. since u r frm delhi itself .. so btr u personally visit these firms n get ur intrnship confrmd.

Civil, SEBI and corporate are three different fields and not all firms would allow a fresher to work in all these three fields at one time.
It will be better if you prioritize what you are interested in and then you can start applying to law firms which work in the field of your interest.

Interning with a good firm is always helpful and adds to your CV. Dont worry about the intern culture. You should go ahead with your internship with Kochhar. One month is not a long time and it will be beneficial for you.

Both OP Khaitan and Fox Mandal are good law firms. Firms change their policy relating to stipends for interns from time to time. So regarding stipend, you will find out on joining the firm though at this stage I would suggest that you dont worry about the stipend unless absolutely necessary.

For internships, applications can be made to the desired law firm by an email and then you can follow it up with a phone call.
If possible, you can handover your resume at the office of the law firm.
There are no hard and fast rules regarding selection of a candidate. Criteria vary from firm to firm. Draft your CV to reflect your strengths.

Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore are the top cities for legal work and I would recommend one of these 3 cities.
If Pune is fine with you, Aswinichandra and Associates is a good place.

hey i m a 2nd yr student of RMLNLU and my Cv is also appealing but since I have been mailing law firms 4 intern as early as from Feb but havent received a positive response. So can u tell me as to what options do I stand 4 the July intern anywhere.
if I wanna approach these firms 4 intern in Dec what can b the Ideal time to send the application so that it is considered?

Most of the top law firms in Mumbai have corporate practice. Top ones amongst them are Amarchand Mangaldas, AZB, Wadia Ghandy, Nishit Desai, Desai Dewanji…
Let ur CV be short and simple and cover all your strengths and experience.

I would like to know that how long should one apply for an internship position since I know some folks who apply a year before..and one thing more..do law firms actually accept people on merit through CV coz all my friends make to firms through phone calls (no exception here) and I don’t have one..I mean that some firms said No to me for the slot they accepted my friend later coz he knew the”Right Way”..Now thats Bad..Btw any one know of firms that actually do take students on the basis of ur Cv..!!Thnx

Most of the big law firms take you on the basis of your CV. Law firms have a name to keep and complicated matters to be dealt with. Though what you are saying may be true to some extent, still that is not the case with all the law firms. You should start applying well in advance and then follow up with a phone call. Just mailing your CV is not enough.

You can call law firms and ask them when they will be taking in interns and apply accordingly.

In Bangalore, almost all gud law firms have an office. You can try Amarchand, AZB, Wadia Ghandy, Kocchar in Bangalore for company law. Its advisable not to join a patent specialization firm since you will restrict yourself to patents only.

In Pune, Wadia Ghandy, Hariani & Co., R.K Dewan, aswinichandra, dua associates have offices. However, it depends on what field you are interested to intern in.

I’ve been offered an internship with Wadia Ghandy, Bombay as well as Trilegal, Bombay – both at the same time – which would be a better choice in terms of :
a)work culture?
b)more broad based general corporate practice
c)chances of a PPO(as I am due to graduate in 2010)?

Both Wadia Ghandy and Trilegal are good firms. The work culture is excellent in Wadia Ghandy and Wadia Ghandy also does a wide range of corporate matters. I am not aware about the work culture in Trilegal. For placements, it depends on the market condition and no firm can guarantee the same.

Firms dont teach/train you but you will have to learn from the work they give you. Depending on the firm, generally interns get more of research work which is very important in the legal field.
Mumbai is the best place to work though for litigation, Delhi can also be considered. All the big law firms have an office in Mumbai and most of the work especially corporate is done in Mumbai. Regarding quality, it is subject to the partner you work with.

You can obtain the details of the companies from their website. Also some companies hire through agents only. So upload y0ur resume on naukri, monster and other gud job sites.
In Pune, you will find major companies (esp. software companies) having their offices. Also the real estate sector is booming in Pune. So shortlist the companies you want to work for and then apply through their website or send in a hard copy of your resume to the company.
